We Salute You, Bikini-Making French Man. On this day in 1946, Louis Réard, a French automobile engineer, was running his mother’s lingerie boutique in Paris when he fashioned a swimsuit from a bra top and two inverted triangles of cloth connected by string. Made out of a scant 30” of fabric, he promoted it as “the world’s smallest bathing suit.”
Réard called his creation the “bikini”.
Men called it “genius” (and the main reason we now lay on our stomachs).
Cool Kicks. One of my favorite cultural/fashion brand websites, Gourmet, just launched their sick Spring 2009 collection line of casual footer and jewelry, including some sweet “Tony Hawk meets Kayne West meets The Professor from Gilligan’s Island” sneaks. Perfect for your weekend in the Hamptons at Diddy’s. Click pic for the big love.
